I want to say something about that “90% of women want to exit the industry” statistic

memoirsofaworkingprostitute:

As someone who was forced into sex work because of extreme economic
circumstance (aka poverty), I would probably be considered one of those
who “wanted out”

But using me as a statistic to silence sex workers who love their jobs and continue working by choice DID NOT HELP ME

Four
years ago, I begged my day-job boss to give me more hours.  BEGGED.
Said if something didn’t change soon I would have to become a sex worker
in order to feed my family.  Nobody helped me.  I didn’t qualify for
any government assistance programs.  Minimum wage was $8/hr at the time,
and it was not even close to being enough to survive.  I had no other
options.  Sex work was my ultimate last resort.

Because
of websites like Backpage, I didn’t have to work on the street, where
conditions are a thousand times more dangerous.  Redbook allowed me to
screen clients by looking at their review history.  But in the back of
my mind there was always an incredible amount of fear. Fear of law enforcement trumped my fear of bad clients. An arrest would have destroyed my entire family.
Because I was terrified of the police, I took many clients that I
should not have, and in doing so subjected myself to abuse in several
cases.

The notion that sex workers should just “get another job” because of tightened prostitution laws is unfair and unrealistic. Many of those you claim to support because they “want out” are already doing sex work as a last resort.  There is no other job. This is it.  Taking
away the few safety precautions they have is pulling the rug out from
under them and making their job that much more dangerous.
Again, for many of us, sex work was our only option.

You
will never eradicate the sex industry, and these moral crusades to “end
demand” do nothing but harm those you claim to care about.

If
you really want to help people exit the industry, advocate for a living
wage.  Advocate for better addiction services that help rather than
punish addicts.  Provide assistance to LGBT teens who were disowned from
their families and are now living on the streets.  Stop the
school-to-prison pipeline. The problem is a societal one that cannot be fixed with anti-prostitution laws.

its weird being 18, 19, 20 in 2016 because i remember going into kindergarten and seeing those chunky ass giant computers at the desk and then going through school while technology rapidly develops and graduate in a world where people can have the entire internet and more just in their pocket like idk its so strange to me

sorry to add to the post but I remember in 5th grade when they invented the “smart whiteboard” and my school won one for the library and everyone lost their shit because they were so expensive and I graduated high school last year and by the time I graduated every single classroom had one. Watching technology go from glitchy and expensive to powerful and affordable within less than ten years continues to blow my mind

no but also like owning a flip phone was the Coolest Shit™ and you could take photos(???) and it was like so incredible, and it was all fun and games until you pressed the key for THE INTERNET and you knew you’d be charged so you pressed that cancel key eighty times and prayed to god that he’d take mercy on you…and then iphones became a thing and it was like unreal

Going from vcrs and huge roll in tvs to streaming the movie online and projecting that onto the smart board within the span of 5-10 years.

ok but do you guys remember before proper projectors were put in there was the overhead projector that could only read clear plastics and it projected using light and mirrors

Technology

remember when you got your first phone, and it had monoton/polyphone ringtones=? OR THE FIRST TIME YOU COULD ACTUALLY PUT A SONG AS YOUR RINGTONE 1:1 that was such a huge thing…..Also the first phones with coloured displays, 100x100px photos……god what a time….

I remember before iPods became a thing and I was in like 5th grade and I got a Walkman CD player (because regular CD players would skip and shit if you moved them too much and walkmans were like A+ technology that you could listen to CDs on the go) and I had like the whole case of CDs I’d take with me everywhere. Then iPods became the new norm and everyone’s mind was collectively blown

My great-grandmother went from being the first house in town to have electricity to emailing her cross-national friends in her lifetime.

I’ve never worked at a library, but I’ve always loved going to them, and I’ve worked at 3 bookstores, including the one I’m the manager for now. I had no idea so many aces worked in/liked libraries!

The fact that nobody is talking about Secret’s new commercials pisses me off

This makes me so happy ☺️

Yesssss😭 I damn near cried

I LOVE THIS OMFG

YOOOOOOOOOOO THATS AMAZING!!!!!

Can someone help me understand I wanna cry to ..I feel something went over my head

The woman in the bathroom is trans and is scared that if she comes out of the stall the women that walked in will insult or harass her. but when she comes out they compliment her on her dress instead. The add ends with saying “stress tested for women.” It means Secret is including trans women in their definition of women.

I have reblogged this three times now, each one mentioning the fact that Secret not only included a trans woman, but that they /had the other women compliment her dress and treat her with respect/. I will reblog this every time I see it because it’s so important. More companies should involve trans people in their marketing – we do exist. Props to Secret for getting in on this movement. It makes me really happy to see more of the trans community represented in daily television.

Reblog the shit out of this

We need more positive things like this!

Okay but I did cry
