Queer Reading List Update

jessicameats:

There are no new books on the queer reading list this week.

Don’t
forget that I’m doing a giveaway through 2018. If you provide a new
suggestion for a book
to go on the reading list, you get entered into a
draw (this is a list specifically of sci-fi and fantasy LGBTQ+ books, so bear that in mind when making suggestions). At the end of each month, I will be picking a winner from those
entered and that lucky winner gets a book of their choice from the
reading list. You can also enter by reblogging the Tumblr giveaway post.

Despite there being no new books, there are a number of updates to the layout and interface. Most of these changes are specifically in two areas: navigation buttons and filters.

image

You can still navigate the list by clicking on the arrow buttons to move between pages, but I’ve also added some flag buttons that will let you navigate directly to the area you’re interested in. So if you’re interested in reading books with asexual, demi-sexual, or aromantic representation, you can still click on the navigation arrows until you reach page 6, or you can click on the ace pride flag button and skip straight there. I’ve put these navigation buttons on each page so you can jump around between pages as you wish.

image

I’ve changed a few things about the filters on each page, with the most obvious being that I’ve changed them to buttons rather than a list with tick boxes. This should make it easier to apply filters. I’ve done some resizing and moving around of these buttons on most of the pages to try and make the filters a little less cramped, which again should make it easier to select the filters that you’re interested in. One minor change around these is that I’ve switched the order of the filter buttons for each category so that True now comes before False on all of these buttons.

Hopefully this will improve the usability of the list. To further assist with this I have added alt text descriptions to elements on the views but unfortunately there were some changes I wasn’t able to make. I was asked about making the scrolling bar wider but unfortunately this isn’t a setting I’m able to control. I have suggested making this adjustable to the company whose software I’m using to make the list, but I can’t do much about it unless they decide to listen to that feedback. If you are struggling to use the list for accessibility reasons, let me know and I might be able to give you access to the back end data behind the list. That wouldn’t give you the same ability to filter all the settings, but if there’s a particular sort of representation you’re interested in (e.g. lesbian representation) I could create a pre-filtered view on the back end data and that might be easier to consume if you use a screenreader. If there are other aspects to the list causing accessibility issues, let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

Check out the updated list and see what you think.

so we have these cookie jars that sit on top of the cupboard right. we’ve had them for years. you can record yourself saying something so when you take the lid off you it will make a noise so you can hear if someone is stealing your cookies or something anyway anyway we have 3 of them. a pig, a cow, and an owl. now i was left alone one day. mum and dad at work, my brother at school and my sister at her boyfriends house. so i had a thought. what if i recorded myself screaming? so i did. in all 3 of them. all 3 different screams too. one was an excited shriek, one was a terrified scream, and one was a long shout. these cookie jars recorded up to 15 seconds, so i took FULL ADVANTAGE of that. now…here’s the thing…i did that almost 3 years ago. and these cookie jars have been sitting on top of the cupboard collecting dust.

until today.

mum’s painting the kitchen, so she had to take everything off the top of the cupboard. and uh…you know how battery powered things…start dying? they……slowly run out of juice? she asked me to check inside one of the jars. the pig, to be exact. and…the pig was the terrified scream. i unsuspectingly opened the jar and as the lid came off the jar, i remembered what i did. but i didn’t remember in time, because in that next second, a fucking demon cry sounded from this Almost Dead Battery Powered Pig Cookie Jar. it was a sound i never want to hear again. everyone ran into the kitchen to see what that god awful sound was and i just stood there, holding this satanic wailing pig. i shut my eyes, and waited the full 15 seconds, until it was silent, before turning to my mum and handed her the pig, and then leaving the kitchen.

i’ll admit i’ve done some dumb things in my life, but nothing could’ve prepared me for the sound i heard today.

I still need to know what dog this is

It is the Caucasian Shepherd Dog aka Russian Bear Dog. This picture below is just a PUPPY.

Holy shit.

I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE NOW

MOUSE

THE REAL LIFE CLIFFORD!

Level 1

Level 17

Level 35

I could literally ride this dog into battle.

and I would.

For anyone wondering, that last pic is another awesome breed called the Tibetan Mastiff 🙂

Fun fact: Tibetan Mastiffs were often “paired” with Tibetan Spaniels. The Tibetan Spaniel is a natural-born tattle tale and would run along monastery walls to keep an eye out for intruders. Upon spotting someone suspicious they would go get the big dog.

N O. Oh my God that is so cute

WHOA!

They are not some anonymous “a tribe in India”, they are the War-Khasi. Speaking as a former anthro student and as a reference librarian, I am beyond sick of posts (and articles, and emails, and museum displays) like this that present the work of a people without actually naming the people. It’s erasure, it’s reducing the great works of a culture to an Ozymandias-esque curiosity for foreigners to consume rather than an accomplishment that should help bring awareness of that culture’s existence.

They are the War-Khasi, a division of the Khasi, a people who call themselves Hynñiew Trep. They live in Meghalaya, and they have been building these bridges in the town of Cherrapunji for longer than anyone knows. They are not anonymous.
