Movie Review: The Three Musketeers

Not having too many pressures on my time, I went to see the new Three Musketeers. I’m not really sure if I had any expectations of this movie, having only seen a few previews that had action, cannons, swords, and random explosions. It looked at least mildly amusing and filled with enough violence to keep me entertained.

I was wrong.

I guess it helps that I didn’t really have any expectations, but I really wasn’t impressed with the movie. There wasn’t anything new. I think the costumes were very nicely done and I was intrigued by the airships, but I don’t feel like it moved fast enough for me to be invested in the story. Plus, I already knew the story pretty well so there weren’t any huge revelations. I’m not sure if I would have gotten more out of it if I hadn’t seen like eight different versions of this story in the past decade.

I did like that most of the main characters were ones I don’t really recall having seen before and that the “big name” actors and actresses were all unexpected characters. And the action scenes really were fun to watch and well done. Maybe there could have been more of them and it might have moved the story along a little bit faster?

It’s funny, but I’ve been gone from the movie scene  for quite a few months and there’s really nothing coming out that I just can’t wait to see. I feel disinterested in most movies coming out these days. I did enjoy the preview for The Darkest Hour, but I didn’t catch when that would be coming out. Probably at a time when I won’t be able to watch it. Overall, maybe I’m just over-exposed to movies and they all feel the same these days and I would say that the new Three Musketeers is a good movie to watch at home when I’m working on other projects but need something on in the background.
