Lately I’ve been doing this thing where when men give me shit at my job, I choose to instead speak to their wives/girlfriends/female counterpart. I had a dude today try to yell at me and I ignored him and instead spoke in a very level voice to his wife instead. He literally stomped his feet like a fucking toddler and said “stop ignoring me! I’m talking!” And his wife said “George, please use a quieter voice. You’re embarrassing me.”

You are a genius and I’m using this

Lol I learned it from my mom. She does this all the time and eventually the guy either sulks off somewhere or adjusts his behaviour and THEN she’ll address him. I did this with my friends puppies when I was training them and it works the same tbh

This is the kind of behavior you use on little kids, which I find both hilarious, disturbing and very telling of how little we expect men to GROW THE FUCK UP

Survivorship Bias

meret118:

dieselpunkisdad:

I have posted about survivorship bias and how it affects your career choices: how a Hollywood actor giving the classic “follow your dreams and never give up” line is bad advice and is pure survivorship bias at work.

When I read up on the wikipedia page, I encountered an interesting story:

During WWII the US  Air Force wanted to minimize bomber losses to enemy fire. The Center for Naval Analyses ran a research on where bombers tend to get hit with the explicit aim of enforcing the parts of the airframe that is most likely to receive incoming fire. This is what they came up with:

image

So, they said: the red dots are where bombers are most likely to be hit, so put some more armor on those parts to make the bombers more resilient. That looked like a logical conclusion, until Abraham Wald – a mathematician – started asking questions:

– how did you obtain that data?
– well, we looked at every bomber returning from a raid, marked the damages on the airframe on a sheet and collected the sheets from all allied air bases over months. What you see is the result of hundreds of those sheets.
– and your conclusion?
– well, the red dots are where the bombers were hit. So let’s enforce those parts because they are most exposed to enemy fire.
– no. the red dots are where a bomber can take a hit and return. The bombers that took a hit to the ailerons, the engines or the cockpit never made it home. That’s why they are absent in your data. The blank spots are exactly where you have to enforce the airframe, so those bombers can return.

This is survivorship bias. You only see a subset of the outcomes. The ones that made it far enough to be visible. Look out for absence of data. Sometimes they tell a story of their own.

BTW: You can see the result of this research today. This is the exact reason the A-10 has the pilot sitting in a titanium armor bathtub and has it’s engines placed high and shielded.

If you want to think scientifically, ALWAYS ask what data was included in a conclusion. And ALWAYS ask what data was EXCLUDED when making a conclusion.

If they have excluded information because “it doesn’t exist” or “it was too hard to get” or “it was good data but was provided by people we don’t like”, then that is a BIG RED FLAG that the analysis was flawed.

Another example of this is originally doctor’s thought smoking protected people from developing dementia until someone pointed out it was because smokers didn’t usually live long enough to get the most common forms.

many people have been saying since the beginning he is going to come after citizens. First he came for undocumented, then for green card holders, and now for actual citizens. This doesn’t end with just that.

This is also happening in the context of an extremely close Senate election in Texas where a Democrat, Beto O’Rourke, is in a statistical tie with wildly unpopular Republican incumbent Ted Cruz. There’s a lot of energy on the Democratic side of this election, especially in this state, and you know what happens if your citizenship is in question, if your birth certificate is no longer proof of where you were born

You can’t vote.

The talk of “voter fraud” was blatantly itself fraudulent.

NPR “Member Of Disbanded Trump Voter Fraud Commission Speaks Out” [Aug 4, 2018]

A member of the President’s now-defunct voter fraud commission is
speaking out. NPR’s Don Gonyea talks to Matthew Dunlap about the panel,
which he says was set up to validate the president’s claims.

And with this denaturalization of citizens, the racist focus on “illegal immigration” becomes clear as another way to excise the people Trump et al do not like from the group of citizens and voters who get to decide.

With gerrymandering Republicans have gotten reliant on being able to choose their voters rather than having the voters honestly choose them.

They know suppressing the vote or removing Americans from the American public is the only way for them to win. But even with all of this, honestly? Turning out can still stop them.

This stuff isn’t entrenched yet.

The key word there being “yet.”

I read on Vox that nearly 50% of Millennials aren’t planning to vote this November… well, it might be the last time a lot of us can vote. And if it is, it won’t be the Boomers who are entirely to blame. It will be every Millennial who could have voted and didn’t.

Here’s where to register to vote: https://www.usa.gov/register-to-vote

Also, you need to vote in your state’s primary elections.
