We did a pretty good fucking job, Jesus Christ

Remember this the next time you want to complain about GMO’s, we may not have done it in a lab but they still are that.

Bananas looked like lemons wtf

Isn’t this more of a combination of selective breeding and GMOs? Not just GMOs?

Yes.  But people talk about how GMO’s are “unnatural”, yet for centuries humanity has been exploiting mutations in animals and plants to produce food for themselves.

GMO’s are simply the process of inducing these mutations reliably.

People hear “Lettuce being modified with scorpion DNA” and think that we’re now eating scorpions.  But, in reality, they’re taking a tiny bit of scorpion DNA and splicing it into the plant.  Why?  So the plant will produce poison that is not harmful to humans but will deter insects, reducing the use of pesticide, which CAN be harmful to humans and the environment.

GMOs are producing rice that can survive flooding, which makes rice more reliable yields and will prevent food shortages in poor nations that rely on said crops for staple food.

GMOs are also creating spider-goat hybrids.  Why? So we can splice web production into the goat’s udders.  We’ll be able to spin huge quantities of spider silk, enough to reliably create spider silk cables and ropes, which have more tensile strength than steel.

I for one am glad I live in a time where watermelons aren’t giant tomato abominations

The issue with GMOs is that corporations like Monsanto are patenting GMOs and arresting indigenous farmers for cross pollinating with they seeds. But there is nothing dangerous about the science.

^This.

The problem isn’t the science, it’s what capitalism does with that science.

this should be in the largest letters we’ve got, plastered everywhere until it gets through people’s heads:

The problem isn’t the science, it’s what capitalism does with that science.

The thing about being LGBT+ is, at some point in your childhood, no matter how accepting your parents are, at some point, you have to question: “do they love me unconditionally?” And then you have to plan for the possibility hat the answer is no. And that fucks you up. Straight cis people never have to question that.

Before I came out to my parents, I literally planned what I’d do if my parents decided to kick me out, like what I’d pack, which friend I’d stay with. Luckily, I never had to do any of that, but the fact that being disowned seemed so likely to me, that I planned it to so much detail… it fucks you up, man, and it takes a while to stop feeling like you’ll be forced out any day.

That’s why I hate it when people dismiss the importance of coming out, and just how difficult the process really is. Straight cis people really don’t know what it’s like. It’s only when you’ve found yourself preparing for the absolute worse when you can truly understand why so many people opt for silence.

This is also why there are so many people passionate about sexuality/sexual orientation/gender/general queer-ness. We don’t want other people to go through the same things we’ve gone through. And we want to make it easier for the people whose ‘escape plans’ actually become reality.

This is also why I’ve heard so many people say ‘I’ll never deny my sexuality/sexual orientation/gender/general queer-ness’. Because you don’t go through all that fear for something that isn’t important.

I really wanted to go to the pride parade, but I had nobody to go with and complained randomly to my mom about it. Next morning she calls to tell me she’s on her way (she lives 3 hours away) and we’re going! So I didn’t get to walk as a part of it, but I did get to see it, and a handful of ace flags!

Open relationships seem to be becoming more popular which is cool, but this should be kept in mind:

If your partner is allowed to flirt and mess around with other people, and you’re not, you’re not in an open relationship. You’re being strung along, manipulated, and emotionally abused by someone who wants to do what they want on their terms, and control you at the same time.

Get out.

This happened to a friend of mine. The second she slept with someone else her boyfriend flew into a rage and my friend blamed herself. He also had a girlfriend who didn’t even know about her so…he was straight up cheating on his girlfriend and forbidding my friend he was seeing from seeing anyone else and called this an “open relationship.” My friend actually bought this as legitimate polyamory. Exploiting the language of polyamory can allow abusers to gaslight you to prevent you from even seeing infidelity and abuse for what it is.

This happened to one of my friends, too. He told me a story once of how he went with his girlfriend to visit colleges, and her other boyfriend came along, too. She and the other boyfriend were sleeping in the same bed, being very intimate, and my friend cried himself to sleep. This was a great guy, he deserved so much better. When he broke up with her and went out with my best friend, I couldn’t even be that mad at her (my best friend) (because I wanted to go out with him, too), because I was just glad he was out of that relationship. She was not good for him at all.

Granted, she had issues then that I don’t feel fit to discuss because I didn’t know her that well at that point, and I get the feeling she didn’t see the damage she did as abuse because of those issues, but her emotional issues don’t give her the right to cause emotional pain to my friend and her boyfriend at the time. And the pain she caused him has colored my view of polyamorous relationships even now. People talk about polyamory positivity, and I want to be accepting of it but all I can think of is the shit my friend went through.
