I’ve owned the Emperor’s New Groove for a ridiculous amount of time and it’s one of my favorite happy cartoon movies.
“Emperor Kuzco is turned into a llama by his devious advisor, Yzma, and her hunky henchman, Kronk. Now the ruler who once had it all must form an unlikely alliance with a pleasant peasant named Pacha. Together, they must overcome their differences as they embark on a hilarious, “groovy” adventure.”
I remember the first time I saw this movie. We went to the video rental place near the apartment and the Emperor’s New Groove was the only movie we found in the new releases section that we hadn’t actually seen yet. Since we wanted to watch something new, we wound up renting it. While a delicious dinner of macaroni and cheese and hot dogs was being cooked on the stove, the movie started, and I can’t recall many times in my life when I laughed that much at an animated kids movie.
I mean, you’ve got Tom Jones doing a lot of the theme music for Emperor Kuzco, which says some really interesting things about the tone of the movie. I’d forgotten how much fun the soundtrack to this movie is, though I’d have to admit that I really don’t need the soundtrack itself. I think that’s a matter of context and that, without the fun animation of the movie, the songs might be a little excessive. I dunno. Maybe this will require further investigation.
The movie itself is filled with humor and puns and so much ridiculous silliness that I can’t help but be amused. You never really see Kronk as evil, just a guy trying to do a job and have some fun. Yzma is creepy on a variety of levels, but turns out highly amusing in the end. Kuzco is a pathetic emperor, but he learns a lot throughout the movie. And Pacha shows you how much good a person with a big heart can accomplish. Pacha’s family is also highly amusing. The movie also has a lot of quotable lines, and that’s one of the biggest factor in my enjoyment of movies.
Overall, this movie is definitely a high four on my rating scale. I’m glad I own and it and I definitely watch it repeatedly.
