A Quick Shout Out…

Hey all. A post of mine relating to disability is making the rounds again, and I just wanted to share a quick thought.

I hit the top 99.6% of my field and am the only medic to finish one particular physician level fellowship (and my lovely Patrons helped make that possible – thank you all SO MUCH!!!). I’m married and massively in love, and I work for a world class medical center doing a job I love.

I’m also transgender, a lesbian, and neuroatypical. I struggled with depression and anxiety for decades. I was suicidal for a quarter of a century. I’m a two-time college dropout and was only JUST THIS YEAR diagnosed with ADHD. (It turns out most humans have an ability to CHOOSE what they focus on??!)

So my thought of the day is this: if I can hit the top 99.6% of my field, finish a fellowship without ever finishing college, write 3 books and 2100 blog posts in a year, and build a blog to a following of 15,000+ on some VERY technical things, in spite of all of my challenges and struggles, maybe there are some things you can achieve if you go after them, too.

Don’t focus on what you CAN’T do. (In my case: fit in, be neurotypical, be cis, read a textbook without falling asleep, do grunt work that doesn’t matter, ….) Focus on what you’re GOOD AT (giving my heart and soul to care for strangers, hands-on learning, loving my wife and my family, teaching). Leverage your strengths and your capabilities.

But also set yourself up to win. Get to places that value your strengths (they ARE out there!). Take some time and ACKNOWLEDGE your strengths (you can’t truly leverage them until.you do). Be proud of them. Be proud of YOU.

So if you feel like you’re different or weird or you think you’re broken, you’re amazing. I love you. You have a place in the world. You have a place in my heart. And you’re NOT BROKEN. You may not have found your perfect place yet, but you’re not broken.

PS: I have a really cool share coming up in a couple of weeks, but I wanted to put this up and remind you all that Aunt Scripty Loves You.

xoxo, Aunt Scripty

(No disclaimers. Just love.)

Believe. ❤
