Book Review: Humans Wanted edited by Vivian Caethe

I’ve been really bad about reading books and watching movies lately and not posting reviews for either. I also ordered and purchased a lot of books recently so I’m hoping to start making a dent in the pile of books that I’m reading. Another book I read last week was Humans Wanted (science fiction 218 pages) edited by Vivian Caethe.

“Humans are tough. Humans can last days without food. Humans will walk for days on broken bones to get to safety. Humans will literally cut off bits of themselves if trapped by a disaster. You would be amazed what humans will do to survive. Or to ensure the survival of others they feel responsible for. If you’re hurt, if you’re trapped, if you need someone to fetch help? You really want a human. Twelve authors provide their perspective on human ingenuity and usefulness as we try to find our place among the start. From battletested to brokenhearted, humans are capable of amazing things. Humans Wanted shows not only what we are, but also how awesome we can be.”

One thing I’ve really liked about some of the anthologies I’ve read in the past was that each story in the anthology contained a tiny, one sentence summary of the story right at the beginning, which helped me get in the mindset of what I would be reading next. This anthology had such an eclectic collection of stories with so many imaginative aliens and cultures that it was a little jarring to go from one story to the next without a little transition about what to expect from the next story. A key thing to note about this anthology is that all of the stories are told from the perspectives of the aliens and not the perspectives of the humans in order to show us as the space orcs we are and exactly how weird humans are from alien perspectives.

Sidekick (21 pages) by Jody Lynn Nye. This story was one of my favorites in the anthology. The main character in this story is instantly relatable, as a young one fleeing captivity who encounters a very helpful human who wants to help her get home. I have witnessed and taken part in many random acts of kindness in my life and I’d like to hope that as we progress into space, our helpful and caring nature will be one of those things we carry with us throughout all our travels. One of the other things I really liked about this story was the nebulous nature of gender, both of the other aliens involved and of the human who works to help Tinis get home. Additionally, there are peacekeepers on the planet in the story and they have xi/xir pronouns, which I thought was a very neat and unique way of beginning to normalize gender neutral personal pronouns.

WWHD: What Would Humans Do? (20 pages) by J.A. Campbell. This was another of my favorite stories in the anthology, as it looked at how aliens could use positive aspects of human behavior to learn how to work together for a common cause.

Then There Was Ginny (11 pages) by Sydney Seay. I also liked this story quite a bit, as the writing style and tone was one of the easiest to read in the anthology. This was also another story that highlighted the best parts of humanity while still showing some of the things which make us extraordinarily odd in the eyes of aliens.

The Dowager (21 pages) by Richard A. Becker. This story was interesting from the perspective of a conquered planet and how humanity would adapt to no longer owning our own home. The story was creative but left me feeling at the end as though some part of whatever happens next was missing.

New Union Requirement (11 pages) by Gwendolynn Thomas. I was reminded heavily of the bureaucracy in the Douglas Adams books during this story, which amused me greatly. The use of pet names and such for other members of the crew was a very amusing part because of how often in my own life I rename things so that I can create easier memory links to certain things and it’s nice to see that I am not alone in my naming of things and people.

The Sound of His Footsteps (17 pages) by Mariah Southworth. I think this was the first story in the anthology which highlighted the survival aspect of humanity and just how far we can go, even in horrible conditions and when we’re injured. I really liked how Ciliaso/Liaso was so convinced that this was the end of everything and that they would be best suited to just accept their fate and yet, their human just kept going. I’m not really sure why that was so amusing to me, but it really was and I enjoyed that aspect of this story.

No Way This Could Go Wrong (21 pages) by Alex Pearl. This was another of my favorite stories in the anthology, as it used some of those aspects of culture which never really translate to successfully coordinate interstellar operations. I’m not going to give up the spoilers for this story but it was probably the most fun to read out of all of the stories in this anthology, though the compressed words of the Grzzh were a little hard to read at times.

Through the Never (16 pages) by Eneasz Brodski. This was not one of my favorite stories, though it was interesting to see the psychological impact of extended space travel on the psyche.

Human Engineering (15 pages) by Marie DesJardin. This was a really fun story and clearly showed how difficult it is to motivate humans to do anything by appealing to our “marketable” traits. The innovation and creativity often found in humans is something that can’t really be predicted or forced and this story really showed the motivations behind the better parts of humanity. I enjoyed this story and the manner in which it was presented.

Once Upon a Time There Was a Xurt Named Xcanda (18 pages) by Alex Acks. As much as this title is an absolute mouthful, the story is a really interesting cultural look at how communication across species is bound to have a lot of disjointed parts. I liked how this showed that humans don’t like just giving up on a problem and I was absolutely envious of the entire concept of being able to download cultures and languages into my head. I think that would be one of the single most useful things I could imagine as an additional skill.

A Second Zion (21 pages) by Amelia Kibbie. The mercenary aspect of this story was highly amusing to me, as was what felt like a combination of Farscape and Firefly because of the feel of the story in general. I also liked how the different species worked together as a mercenary team, each using their own strengths to compensate for the weaknesses of their team mates. I can easily see this kind of future for humanity amongst the stars.

Brightened Star, Ascending Dawn (18 pages) by A. Merc Rustad. This was another story I enjoyed quite a bit. It reminded me a bit of In Fury Born by David Weber and also the Brain and Brawn ships from The Crystal Singer Trilogy by Anne McCaffrey. It was a neat story and one of my favorites from this anthology.

Overall, this was a fun anthology and I’m glad I purchased it. Some of the authors have such interesting voices that I might investigate some of their other works or be on the look out for their names in the future. All the stories were definitely unique and I really enjoyed seeing humanity from the alien perspective.

Whoa, I didn’t realize that it was so deliberate, I honestly thought it was unconscious

Scary, scary.

Gonna add on to this:
From the other side of the bar, I see this crap all the time. Seriously. I work at a high-density bar, and let me tell you, I have anywhere from 10-20 guys every night come up and tell me to, “serve her a stronger drink, I’m trying to get lucky tonight, know what I mean?” usually accompanied with a wink and a gesture at a girl who, in my experience, is going to go from mildly buzzed to definitively hammered if I keep serving her. Now, I like to think I’m a responsible bartender, so I usually tell guys like that to piss off, and, if I can, try to tell the girl’s more sober friends that they need to keep an eye on her.
But everyone- just so you know, most of the time, when someone you don’t know is buying you a drink, they’re NOT doing it out of a sense of cordiality, they’re buying you a drink for the sole purpose of making you let your guard down. So:

Tips for getting drinks-

1. ALWAYS GO TO THE BAR TO GET YOUR OWN DRINK, DO NOT LET STRANGERS CARRY YOUR DRINKS. This is an opportune time for dropping something into your cocktail, and you’re none the wiser.

2.IF YOU ORDER SOMETHING NON-ALCOHOLIC, I promise you, the bartender doesn’t give two shits that you’re not drinking cocktails with your friends, and often, totally understands that you don’t want to let your guard down around strangers. Usually, you can just tell the bartender that you’d like something light, and that’s a big clue to us that you’re uncomfortable with whomever you’re standing next to. Again, we see this all the time.

3. If you’re in a position to where you feel uncomfortable not ordering alcohol:

Here’s a list of light liquors, and mixers that won’t get you drunk, and will still look like an actual cocktail:

X-rated + sprite = easy to drink, sweet, and 12% alcoholic content. Not strong at all, usually runs $6-$8, depending on your state.

Amaretto + sour= sweet, not strong, 26%.

Peach Schnapps+ ginger ale= tastes like mellow butterscotch, 24%.

Melon liquor (Midori, in most bars) + soda water = not overly sweet, 21%

Coffee liquor (Kahlua) +soda = not super sweet, 20%.

Hope this helps someone out!

Backing this up from years of bar tending.

Shirley temples and Roy Rodgers are just soda drinks. And have no alcohol and will normally go over someone’s head that it’s not going to get you drunk !

Scenes I need…

artemxmendacium:

Peter Parker: -on meeting Loki, offers his hand- Hi, I’m Peter!

Loki: -shakes his hand- Loki of Asgard.

Peter: Aren’t you like…a bad guy?

Loki: It varies from moment to moment.

Peter: So like…on a scale of one to ten, ten being the worst evil imaginable, like…killing puppies, and one being I’ll spit on your hotdog…where are you right now?

Loki: …maybe a three?

Peter: Cool. Lemme know if it gets above a six.

Loki: -thinking- I like him.

It had been a joke, a flippant line, but somehow, Loki found himself taking the youth up on it.

It was hard living around these heroic Avengers, hard trying to stay close to Thor. And when he felt his need for mischief rise too high, when he felt exasperation with these Midgardians turn too close to spite, he would casually say “Six.” to the young man, or sometimes “Seven.”

And Peter would spend the rest of his day with Loki. He would badger him with questions about magic, or drag him across his beloved city to see its entertainments, or take him along stopping petty crimes. He grounded Loki to the here and now, and distracted him from the churning, jagged shards of ice in his mind.

WE NEED LOKI AND PETER FICS

Stark’s brat had a system. It had been amusing, at first glance, especially when “killing puppies” was apparently a higher level of evil than trying to take over the world. It had risen and fallen – two, five, one. There were honestly good days.

It took some time before a truly bad day came up.

After a difficult battle, the Captain was being particularly sanctimonious, his team following suit. Even Stark made biting comments.

Loki could scream.

“Spider-man,” he said as calmly as he could. The young man glanced up, having been tying up some of their enemies a few yards away.

“Seven.”

“… okay, guys, I’m going to head out with Loki for the rest of the day. Don’t need us for debrief, yeah?”

“Sure,” Stark shrugged, glancing between the two of them oddly. Loki wasn’t entirely sure what the plan was. They went in civilian clothes to a small café.

“I wasn’t paying attention, so whatever was said, I don’t agree,” Peter began. “But that’s not what I’m here for. So. When you teleport, how does that work? Is it harder with longer distances? Or is knowledge of the place more helpful?” Loki blinked, but explained. It led to a discussion of magical theory. Peter (Loki still called him Parker aloud, but the child and even his young friends grew on him in time) was eager and curious, comparing what he knew from Strange and fantasy books to Loki’s knowledge. It was admittedly fascinating to see how many versions of sorcery humans had created by mere imagination. He was definitely amused by the elves and dwarves of Lord of the Rings.

Sometimes Peter tentatively asked about Strange and Maximoff, if they were doing similar things. Never if Loki was at an 8 or above though.

“Strange is like a child prodigy. He’s good, picks the practical parts up well. He even got the jump on me – but he has not had as much time to study as me. He’s a student where I am a master. Maximoff is incredibly powerful and incredibly lucky, but she does not have much training at all.” Sometimes conversation turned to music, animals, current events.

Peter was good. It was odd, how Loki became so sure of the fact so quickly.

After the conversations, often accompanied with food or a walk, he was always down to a 3 or so. Which made Peter an important person.

So the next time Peter was in trouble and the Avengers were indisposed, Loki was not the least bit surprised that he was not the only one ready to tear someone apart for the kid. Two men in red – one with horns, one with guns and swords – a young girl with cat-shaped blasters on her hands, and the Captain’s assassin friend. Loki curled his lips and muttered:

“For anyone that harms you? 10.”

25 No/Low Cost Self Care Acts

1. Have a drink from your favourite cup/mug. Coffee. Tea. Hell, even plain water is nicer when it’s in your fave mug (and you’re probably dehydrated rn so get on that). Allow yourself the couple of minutes to drink it in entirety.

2. Visit the library. Seriously. Nothing says quiet me time like the quiet couches and a novel in a library.

3. Look up some topics on iTunes U and read up on them. You’ll feel accomplished when you learn about a new scholarly topic.

4. Check over your resumé. Anything need to be updated or polished? Do that now, it can come in handy if an opportunity comes knocking.

5. Call a beloved family member or close friend. I just called my aunt for the first time in a little while and honestly you feel a lot lighter and a lot warmer.

6. Listen to ASMR, Binaural Beats, or guided meditation. There’s ASMR and meditation videos on youtube for pretty much any need– general relaxation, reassurance, mock spa days…

7. Volunteer at the local animal shelter. Volunteering is proven to make you feel better about yourself, petting animals helps lower your blood pressure, and nothing compares to the love and gratitude from a dog or cat.

8. Randomly browse Wikipedia or WikiHow. Clicking the random article is always an adventure– probably a laughable one, but you might learn something new.

9. Clean out your closet. It’ll feel like a lot of weight is off your shoulders, and you can sell or donate pieces that are still in good shape.

10. Write out a list of things you like about yourself. It can be tricky at first, but write down whatever comes to mind, even though it may seem trivial. Put the list away for times when you are being too hard on yourself, or need some self love.

11. Movie night. Obviously. Netflix, Hulu, library… A lot of thrift and secondhand stores often have really cheap DVDs. Re-watch your faves, allow yourself a guilty pleasure, or choose something that looks laughably awful.

12. Have a bonfire. Check your local fire codes beforehand, first. A bonfire or a fire pit is extremely soothing, especially wrapped up in a blanket.

13. Meal Plan/Prep. You’re probably going to be cooking anyway, so setting aside a day or half a day to prep meals ahead of time helps free the rest of your schedule.

14. At-Home spa day. Wash your hair. Trim your nails. Soak your feet. Exfoliate.

15. Write letters. Especially to your grandparents if you’re emotionally close– it will make them feel really loved.

16. Sleep in or nap. No explanation needed.

17. Bake cookies or make eggless cookie dough. One serving of edible cookie dough uses only spoonfuls of ingredients you probably have at home.

18. Wash your pillowcases and linens. This is especially good if you’re like me and the depression is real. Washing sheets gets neglected but the feeling of fresh sheets makes everything suck a little bit less.

19. Forgive yourself. Acknowledge that past mistake that’s been eating you alive and accept the fact that you can’t change the past. You’re still growing, still learning.

20. Keep a happiness journal. Before bed, write three things that made you smile that day. Life won’t seem all that bad, and it’s a good way to de-stress.

21. Shamelessly sing and dance along to music you enjoy. That song you would TOTALLY kill on lip sync battle? Own it.

22. If you like makeup/skincare, go to your local sephora or drugstore that has a beauty section. Sephora does free mini makeovers if it’s not busy. At the drugstore makeup counter, ask the beauty questions that you’ve wanted answers to.

23. Remember to say “no.” Declining to do a favour or go on an outing you can’t currently justify or afford does not make you a bad person. It means you have boundaries and deserve respect.

24. Watch some game shows. Lots of channels have them, and there’s plenty of compilations on youtube.

25. Let it out in writing. Sometimes having it all out in black and white can make solutions easier to realize.

I believe in you all! Remind yourself that you’re a good person, and a bad bitch 💕

How about instead of taking Gal Gadot out they team up and kick some nasty people’s asses?

TEAM UP

Diana does have a twin. Two Wonder Women, one made from white clay and one from black.

I’d give my entire college fund to see this happen! 👏🏽❤️

Team up! Team up! Team up!

Her name is Nubia. In the comics, she was also sculpted from clay, like Diana, only she was kidnapped by Ares and trained to fight by him. She was made to literally be Diana’s equal in every way, and even uses the name Wonder Woman as well.

In short, yes, team up

TEAM UP TEAM UP TEAM UP

i love Legally Blonde so much. all of the women are so supportive of each other im??

  • when Elle was supposed to get engaged, none of the girls were jealous, they were genuinely happy for her n helped her get ready for the big dinner
  • when her bf broke up with her they were supportive
  • when Elle says she wants to go to harvard the counselor lady is like but ur major is fashion, do u have any backup plan? n elle is like nope im going to harvard n the lady is like okay then here’s what u gotta do.
  • her friends didnt get why she wanted to go to law school but supported her anyway, and helped her study
  • when she got 179 on her exam (more than her goal), they treated her like a queen

and that’s only in the first 18 minutes of the movie

Legally Blonde is a “girl power” movie with killer inspirational and positive attitude disguised as a stereotypical blonde movie.
