One of the truest things I’ve ever heard is that people who say they’re “brutally honest” are more interested in the brutality than the honesty.

5 Tips on Connecting With Other Writers, From a Writer With Social Anxiety

maxgraybooks:

1. Be Open

I’m not saying you have to give out every detail of your life, or give anyway anything you aren’t comfortable with, but try to get in the habit of letting lose.

Let the unique parts of your personality out. Be super sarcastic, or rant about your love for cooking. Give people a reason to take interest in you and your blog. Your personality is one of the only things that will separate you from others.

2. Use Hashtags

I know, if you’re anything like I was when I started marketing myself on social media, you just cringed really hard. But face it: No one is going to talk to you if they don’t know you exist.

Get in the habit of ignoring that ridiculous embarrassment and start tagging your posts. Some applicable ones for the writeblr community are:

#writeblr / writblr / writerblr

#writing / amwriting / writer / I love writing

#amwritingromance/etc

#romance/etc

#writer life / writer problems

Make people find you! It’s a lot easier to respond than to initiate.

3. Prompt Discussion & Ask Questions

Listen, a lot of people on Tumblr- Especially writers -are awkward AS FUCK. A lot of the time we want to talk to people, but we don’t know how. So give people something to talk to you about.

It will feel awkward at first. HELLA awkward. And for a while, especially if you have a small following, you won’t get anything back. But if you’re serious about growing your platform, it’s smart to start this early.

Get to know your followers- Take interest in them and more often than not, they’ll take interest in you. And if you have some people you’re already comfortable with, tag them! Make sure they see your stuff- Dashboards get clogged really easily.
