To the hero professors

So, I’m taking U.S. History one and two over the summer at my community college, and the professor is this older white man. Naturally, this is history, and my first assumption walking in to the class is that I’m gonna be stuck listening to this guy drone on for two months of boredom. Great.

Within the first five minutes I knew I was wrong. So, so wrong.

“I don’t want you to be stuck memorizing dates,” he says. “I want you to know the story, the people, the conditions and reactions so that maybe we can all learn from past mistakes.” I was baffled. A history class that doesn’t require you to be able to rattle off dates? Not only that, there’s no homework and we don’t have to read the text book. The only things that are going to be on the test are things that come straight out of his mouth during class. He introduces himself, and proceeds to go around the room and greets every person one at a time. He will do this every day for the rest of the summer one and two semesters.

Then the lecture begins. I say lecture, but it feels more like story time in kindergarten. He begins to speak with such prose and personality that I forget this is a college course. He’s taken something that has so much potential to be mundane and turned it in to a book that I can’t put down. You bibliophiles know what I’m talking about. And then this glorious fucker ends the class in a mid-sentence cliffhanger.

Every class he carries on this way. It feels as if I’m there. Signing the Declaration, fighting against brothers in the Civil War, listening to FDR’s fireside chats, storming the beaches of Normandy… And he remains unbiased. He wants to make sure we see there’s two sides to every story; understand the conditions that lead to those reactions.

We took a test today, a week from our final exam. He goes around the room in his usual affable fashion, but rather than just ask how we’re doing, today he asks if there’s anything he can do for us. Most folks like myself say something along the lines of nothing, or I’m good. This girl next to me jokingly says, “You can buy me a coffee.”

“How much is it?” He asks.

“About five dollars.” She answers.

And without hesitation, this professor, this wonderful man with a love of teaching, and a love of his students, pulls out a fucking twenty dollar bill, hands it to her and just says “Go get your coffee, and bring me the change.” Then continues on his way like it’s nothing.

And it may be nothing. Maybe I’m blowing something small out of proportion. But in a world where it feels as if every class is just dragging you along in the gravel behind it, and the professors seem to just be going through the motions; to see someone actually do something kind and ask nothing in return is so refreshing and uplifting.

I don’t know. Maybe this is just a boring shit post, but I really needed to share my appreciation for this hero of a teacher. A teacher who after over 30 years of teaching is still happy with what he does.

tl;dr: Some teachers leave a long lasting impact on your life; change the way you think, the way you see the world. Appreciate them for what they are. The unsung heroes of a failing education system.

“Hey, sweetheart, heard you got into a fight with some laundry and lost.” Xorne looked up from his holopad to see that human-Todd was standing next to human-Penny’s cot.

“You should see the other guy,” she muttered but her speech was slurred.

“Hope he looks just as bad.” He said before he brushed hair out of her face. Xorne was intrigued. He so rarely had a chance to observe casual interactions between humans. He knew humans were pack animals-it was the first lesson that any individual needed to know when working with humans-but this kind of physical intimacy was stunning to Xorne. “Darling, they gave you the good stuff,” human-Todd laughed at her and then looked at her wrist, wrapped firmly in bandages and a heavy brace. “You’re a klutz! You didn’t have to go this far to avoid buying drinks tonight.”

“You’re buying,” she mumbled. He smiled and pressed lips to her forehead. Xorne would have blushed if he were capable of doing so. He had not known that human-Todd and human-Penny were mated.

“You’re sticking to water til you sober up.”

“Jerk.”

As she drifted to sleep human-Todd looked at Xorne. “What’s the prognosis?”

“human-Penny will make a full recovery.” Xorne said. His tone was flustered to his own ears. “I am sorry to intrude upon your intimate time. I will leave if you wish to continue. I did not realize you two were mates…” He stumbled over the words. He had thought that humans were supposed to be prudish by other species’ standards! The guidebooks all said so!

“What?” human-Todd had a confused expression. “Theres nothing intimate going on. That’s disgusting!”

Xorne hesitated. “I have offended and angered you. I apologize for my actions. What have I done that I may not repeat it in the future.”

Human-Todd made a disgusted noise. “Penny is like my kid sister! We grew up on Charon Six together in the old Catholic group home in the city. I would never ‘mate’ with her!” He was very upset. Xorne tried to puzzle this out.

“You are… hatchmates?” Xorne asked tentatively.

Human-Todd sighed. “Not literally but… you guys don’t have adoptive families? Found family?”

“My people are solitary by nature.” Xorne said. “I can recognize hatchmates by scent to avoid inbreeding but we do not form social groups similar to your ‘families’.” Human-Todd seemed so… sad. “Do not cry, human-Todd!”

“I wasn’t going to cry.” He replied. “That’s just… sad, I guess. I never knew my…” he fumbled for a word. “What would you call parents?”

“That term is sufficient.”

Human-Todd nodded “Anyway, never knew my parents. The Sisters said I was a war orphan. So I made my family. Penny and I signed on here together… hell, I couldn’t leave her alone. You see how klutzy she is! She needs someone to look after her.” He said mostly to himself. “I think you’re part of my family too, Xorne.”

Xorne blinked. He felt oddly good at the statement. It was clearly very significant to him.

“You’ve always been good to us and you try to look out for Penny. So… honorary cousin or something?” Human-Todd offered his hand. Xorne hesitated before he recognized the human gesture for handshake. He extended his clawed hand

“I am honored.” Human-Todd grinned. The expression always seemed predatory to Xorne but he had been assured it was a friendly expression. They released hands. Xorne paused a moment before speaking up. “What is a ‘cousin’?”

Human-Todd laughed. “Its uh… your parent’s hatchmate’s kid.” Xorne made an odd face. “Part of our families.” He assured Xorne. “Hey, I gotta get back to that meeting with the researcher. Shes gonna bitch if I don’t and then the Commander will scold me. Not that I would mind that too much.” Xorne did not understand what was obviously some kind of human innuendo. “Keep an eye on her? Lemme know when she wakes up?”

“I will… cousin-Todd.” Xorne said, testing the new phrase. His human cousin grinned.

“I like it!” And he left. Xorne felt his frill rise and fall in pleasure at this new feeling. He was part of a human family! He gave a little trill before he settled back in his seat with his holopad, contented now to be watching over his new human-cousin.

I rlly love the humans are weird space orc things and I wanted to contribute.

I was thinking about how humans sit in really strange places and positions sometimes for no reason at all, sometimes because they are just too lazy to move to somewhere more comfortable. I mean, sometimes we just sit because we don’t want to stand any more. But what if aliens only sat on chairs and stuff, like it was a sign of injury or danger, or just very strange to sit somewhere that wasn’t meant to be sat?

Xynotle enters Human-Jamie’s quarters after searching the ship for him.

Human-Jamie is no where to be seen. Xynotle turns to leave the room when a voice calls,

‘Who’s that?’

Xynotle would have jumped of fright if his species were capable.

‘Human-Jamie?’ He asked, scared that the human had turned invisible or was perhaps one of those ‘ghosts’ that Human-Albert keeps talking about.

A hand raised from beside Human-Jamie’s bed, the side that was pressed against the wall.

‘Over here buddy.’

Xynotle grew worried. He moved closer to see Human-Jamie squished between the wall and the bed, scrolling on his phone with his thumb.

‘What has happened? Have you injured yourself? Are you unable to escape?’

‘Nah, bud, I’m fine. Just can’t be bothered moving.’

‘You.. you are.. comfortable?’

‘Meh, it’s not the most comfortable place in the world but it’s alright.’

Human-Jamie continued to scroll.

Xynotle decided it best to leave him be. He left, completely confused.

Znyph entered the kitchens to see two of their three human crew members sitting on stools next to the bench, the third human, Human-Alex, sitting on top of the bench. They were having a conversation about ‘puppers’.

‘Human-Alex! Are you trapped?’ Znyph asked worriedly.

‘Trapped?’ Human-Alex raised one ‘eyebrow’, something some humans did when confused.

‘On top of the bench, are you trapped?’

‘Ummm… no?’

‘You… choose to sit there? Even when there is a perfectly functional stool next to Human-Jessica?’

‘Well.. yeah. This way we are sitting in a circle so it’s easier to talk to each other.’

‘Oh.. ok then, carry on.’

Znyph walked away, pretending as if he understood.

‘Human-Roman, What has happened? Have you fallen?’ Crynpho was concerned for Human-Roman’s health.

‘No.’ Answered Human-Roman, laying on the ground in front of the couch.

‘Then why are you laying on the ground instead of on the couch?’ Cryphno was now extremely confused. ‘You were on the couch only ten earth minutes ago.’

‘I don’t know man, I just sorta.. ended up here’

Cryphno didn’t understand humans at all.

Humans are weird, Sunburn edition

Ok, so I’ve got a pretty bad sun burn right now, and my skin is peeling, and I just started thinking about how an alien would react to that. Not just the skin color changing, but also the skin peeling after hearing that humans don’t shed their skin. So, enjoy:

Bryce’s fingers brushed the back of his neck. Despite how gentle he’d tried to be, he still winced. There was a brief knock and then his door slid open. Asryll-Nox, a fairly new crew member who still unclear on human customs, entered. He froze when he saw Bryce sitting shirtless on his bunk. He averted his eyes and the spines on his back rose up sharply, a sure sign of shock and embarrassment.

“My apologies Human Bryce! I was unaware that you were in the process of—I am sorry. I will leave you.” Asryll backed out as he spoke. Bryce stood.

“No, it’s ok. I’m not busy. What did you need?” he asked. Asryll scratched the back of his neck and his spines rose even farther.

“It… was not important. I am sorry I interrupted your… skin change…ceremony… for nothing,” he mumbled. Bryce narrowed his eyes for a moment before he suddenly understood.

“Oh. Oh! Asryll, it’s a sunburn,” he laughed. Asryll did not share in his mirth. Instead, his spiked hand shot out and grabbed Bryce’s wrist, his eyes wide.

“You are injured? Why are you not in the med bay? Come, please, we must treat your burns!”

Bryce gently disentangled his hand from Asryll’s, a hint of annoyance creeping into his voice.

“It’s just a sunburn. Sure, it’s a pretty bad one, but I’ve had worse. There’s no need to go to the med bay.” He turned and picked up his shirt. Asryll noticed something and stepped close to him, reaching out to touch his back. He pulled back at the the last second, hesitant to hurt him accidentally with his rough skin.

“But… your skin! It is falling off!” The horror in his voice was evident. Bryce automatically turned to try and look at his own back before sighing in exasperation.

“I told you Asryll, it’s fine.”

Asryll’s eyes rolled back in his head as he consulted the chip embedded in his brain. After a moment he rolled his eyes forward again and glared at Bryce. His spines rattled. Angry? No, worried.

“You are lying. Unlike us, humans do not shed their skins, and they do not lose their skin and live.” His voice faltered as he said the last word. “You are dying?” he whispered. Bryce laughed.

“Search the symptoms of a sun burn Asryll. Go on.”

Asryll did. And he felt very relieved when he read the list.

“Sun burns, although painful, are not fatal,” he quoted. Asryll bared his teeth at Bryce, remembering from his Foreign Species course that, unlike for most species, it was a sign of non aggression and friendship. Smiling it was called. “Not fatal,” he repeated. Bryce smiled back.

“Nope. Not fatal.”

We’ve already discussed the whole, “Humans need chaperones so they don’t spill their pack bonding on anything within a 20 mile radius.” Thing, but you know the thing I seem to always see people leave out? It’s not just petting. It’s not just “Hug the pretty kitty baby!!” As far as I’ve seen, humans will adopt basically any behavior of an animal besides butt sniffing and peeing on things. I’ve seen people rather than get a dog to understand human, figure out how to communicate something in dog. I know people do the whole blink slowly at cats because to cats that means we calm and good and friends! We don’t (usually) go barreling into the creature den. We sit around and watch the animal til we know how they say hi! And then we get them to like us! And THEN we smother them with affection and pack bond-y-ness!! We make the sounds their babies make! We learn to speak their language! We kiss their noses sometimes!

Pain tolerance

So another of my Humans are weird Posts. Dunno If someone already wrote about this so i’ll just start:

I just remembered, that i was once trying to learn how to flip a knife within my Hand and it fell down and landed a few mm deep in my knee and i was only Like “that wasn’t right” pulled it out, “bandaged” the wound with a scarf and kept training. Another time i Cut myself accidently with my katana deep in my hand. Well it was bleeding a lot. So i just went to my Mother (all our bandages are in her room) but she was on the Phone so i just stood there, quietly bleeding on the floor waiting for her to end the call. Still have a scar from that. But If i’m pocked with a needle or get lightly boxed in my arm it is too much pain for me. Or my father is really weak to poking him strongly nur when he had a Heart seizure while driving He calmly drove Home, called an ambulance and cooked something for my sister while waiting for them.

What i wanna say is that it is really weird what types of pain we can easily tolerate and which ones we can’t.

Now imagine there is this really kickass human in a spaceship Crew. Took a bullet in the stomach? No reaction. Had to amputate a hand? Didn’t even flinch. But then one of His crewmates accidentally pokes him and He starts screaming in pain.

Please add a good story.
