There’s only one phrase to describe Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld: ahead of its’ time. Created in 1983, it seemed to perfectly herald and anticipate where geek culture would be in the decade of the 2010s, for good or ill.
The premise is superficially reminiscent of Steven Universe with its Gemstone Houses, but really, a lot of people compared the premise to Harry Potter: an ordinary girl finds she is a celebrity in a hidden mystic world, where she learns to be a wizard with help from a redhead best friend and a friendly giant.
The Christy Marx revival was interesting, too. The woman who adapted both Conan the Barbarian and Jem for animated television is the only person with the resume to pull off a premise that is similar to both.
